How do I copy and Edit home video ?

I have 7 full boring tapes of my trip to the Yukon last year. Well it wasn’t boring, but by looking at it hours upon hours of video tape it is. My goal is to condense it into a 20 minute highlight video, but it will require major editing. I also plan on making music that I already have part of the video. I have a DVM Mini digital tape. I am sure I plug the camcorder into the PC with the digital tape, but what is next?

this is kind of a hard question to answer, but the first thing you need to do is capture all your footage into your computer. You’ll need to hook up your camera to your computer thru a firewire cable, or maybe a usb, depending on your camera.
Next you need a video editing program. All PC’s come with Windows Movie Maker free, so there’s a starting point.
Go to file/capture video, and you should have control of your camera from your computer. You have to record your footage in real time, so you’ll have to sit thru every tape.

**If your hard drive is formatted as FAT32, you can only capture about 4GB at a time, this translates to about 14 minutes of footage…therefore you’ll have to record for 14 minutes, stop it, then record the next 14 minutes. If your hard drive is formatted as NTSF, then you dont need to worry about this**

When you have your footage captured, you can drag each clip down to the time line, where you’ll make your edits. You can import music files, pictures, etc into your editing program and then also drop them into the timeline. It is hard to explain how to edit, this is something you’ll have to play around with.

once you are done, you can export back to a mini DV tape, or make a small video for the web. Good luck with everything!!
