How much room is needed to install garage door openers?

I want to install garage door openers in my garage. I have a vent that runs across the ceiling directly behind where the track stops on the door. There is some room between the vent and the end of the door in the up possition. It is a standard 8′ ceiling.

I want to know how much room is needed between where the end of the door (in the up possition) and the vent.
It turns out that I was wrong. I only have 7′ ceilings in my garage. This makes a difference because I will not be able to do anything differently with the door tracks.

Designers of some buildings are idiots. If your doors are 6’6″ you might have some hope. You might try to pull the horizontal door tracks below the ductwork. To do this you will have to put longer hangers on the rear horizontal tracks from the ceiling. You will need about 1 1/4 ” between the top of the door and the bottom of the duct. If you force the tracks down too much they will buckle. Remember the front mount of the opener track will be higher than the motor. The worst case you can have 9″ radius ( the bend in the track and you probably do not have a 15″ radius but only a 12″) installed. To check this measure from where the bottom of the curve joins the vertical track to the horizontal angle piece that runs along the horizontal track. That will drop your height by approx. 3″. Remember to make sure your vehicle still fits. If you cut the door opener track remember you will find the door will not open all the way because the trolley will hit the powerhead. (and some I did not because the installations were impossible)
