Vacuum advance problem?

Hi i have a VW 1969 Bug with SVDA distributor. recently i adjust the point gaps. while adjusting i found that the wire which running from the points plate to distributor body is crossing the vacuum advance pulling rod path. so i raise the wire so it will not come a across the rod. after settings static timing i tried to start the engine, but when press the gas pedal engine starts to show flat spots (engine runs like it has a huge miss). Then i disconnect the vacuum advance and sealed the vacuum tube so air will be not sucked into carb. Then the engine ran fine. but i notice that the fuel economy went down. And after a open wide throttle session i get a backfire from the exhaust which i think the unburnt fuel since the engine is not advanced to burn them. What could be the problem with my vacuum advance ?

The rubber diaphram inside the advance housing has a hole in it. NAPA or a major parts house shoiuld sell the unit new or rebuilt. This happens all the time with old stuff and no reason to think it is unusual.
