Will my newly hatched moth be ok?
About 10 months ago we found a fat green caterpillar at our local library. We brought him home and made him a little place to live. It made a cocoon and today we found that it had hatched. We were really surprised how ugly…but cute…it is. Anyhow we just left him alone thinking that nature would take its course. Upon reading a few things tonight I see that it should have hung itself to allow its wings to form correctly. Now it looks all shriveled up. We attached him to the mesh cage topper and misted him with water. Will it be ok? Will its wings eventually be ok?
A moth is not like a butterfly. It doesn’t necessarily need to hang itself to allow its wings to form. It should pump the fluid from its body into its wings, making them firm. Is its body very fat? If so, then it probably just hasn’t done this yet. There is no specific amount of time this must be done in. I can still do it. If nothing happens, then there may have been a problem in its metamorphosis. This can happen when the cocoon is kept in the wrong temperature or the wrong humidity or any number of other factors. I would just leave it alone. It will most likely be alright and it it won’t be there is nothing you can do to help it. Nothing you do can make any difference, anything you would do would only hurt it. So it’s best just to let it be a little longer and see what happens.
