Interview: Southern Baptist LifeWay Professor David Francisco on Sunday school, the strong program, by Peter Menkin

In a letter via e-mail, LifeWay href = "http://missionohio.e-quip.net/presentations/show/2046" target = "_blank"> David Francis, Director of Sunday school, discipleship, church networks and associations, LifeWay Church Resources provides an answer to a question from this writer about Baptists South Church Sunday School. He responds, in part, to the questions asked of Sharon Ely Pearson, of the Episcopal Church in his earlier interview. The answers provide a context for his statement. But keep in mind your email has this quote: "As God works through us. . . We will help people – through churches – to know Christ and seek His Kingdom by providing biblical solutions that spiritually transform individuals and cultures. "questions with answers are below this letter by email, an informative and comprehensive response has the mark of inspiration and spontaneity: Email Letter: Sunday school is still a solid program of ministry in Southern Baptist churches. On a typical Sunday in our denomination, about 6 million people will gather for worship in the churches of SBC. About 4 million attend Sunday school, or two out of three faithful. My guess is that these people are going to attend one of the more than 400,000 Sunday school classes. More than half of those attending one of these classes, usually meeting on Sunday morning before or after a worship service will be adults.

In an analysis I did with Eric Geiger, co-authored with LifeWay President Thom Rainer of the popular book Simple Church, we find that in a sample of more vibrant the churches of the SBC, more than 87% operated Sunday school – or its functional equivalent under another name – as the critical "second step" in the process of discipleship of his church. 50% of these groups is simply called the "Sunday School." The rest use a different term, although I agree with one comment made in response to the article Episcopal most people still just call "Sunday School", regardless of any new, name officially cool!

The other 12.5%? The churches "primary" Phase 2 "strategy was off-campus small groups – at least for adults. This is a change in the Southern Baptist church practice, to be sure. However, the Sunday school is still very strong.

In broader terms "Faith formation," the term preferred by its source Episcopal, Sharon Ely Pearson, Southern Baptist churches have traditionally operated another ministry program to help members grow deeper in their faith, defend their doctrines, and equip for ministry and missions. This program is often called the "Discipleship" or "Discipleship." This name has evolved more than "Sunday School." It was originally "Baptist Union Youth," and then "The formation of the Union," then "Training Church," and then "Discipleship Training", and now usually only "Discipleship" or some name that includes the word as "University of Discipleship." In general, the chance for "Discipleship" offers a variety of options to choose. That occasion was usually on Sunday afternoons before the evening service. In some churches, the opportunity is Wednesday night. In others, elective courses are offered at different times of the week. The important thing to note is that in terms of "faith formation," the ministry program represents a "third way" in a process of discipleship where worship attendance is step 1 and a Sunday school class or small group is the step 2. Hope this makes sense! O provides some ammunition for a poll question!

Part of our mission is to provide LifeWay curriculum materials for Sunday school and discipleship groups. Our full name is LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention, and are governed by a board elected by the convention, and therefore an SBC entity. We enjoy a large customer base of many denominations, however. LifeWay also operates a chain of LifeWay Christian Stores and produces trade books and Bibles through our B & H Publishing Division, along with the products and services offered through the division where I work, LifeWay Church Resources. The Interview: Is individual salvation, and if the church or congregation as experience goes experience and process of faith formation? In what way LifeWay introduce a concept of individual salvation and the salvation of the congregation and the Church?

Salvation is individual Baptists against a "pact" understanding of salvation in the hands of some faith walks (As the Presbyterian Church where I grew up!). Here is a link to the article on "salvation" of the Baptist Faith and Message, a statement general consensus (but not a creed that is binding) to the south of Baptists.Jerry Vogel, Director of Children's Ministry Publishing at LifeWay, wrote: " Salvation is without doubt an individual response or decision. The experience of the church for children should include some kind of learning experience in small groups. LifeWay resources begin with the birth of laying the foundations on which the Spirit of God can work and take each child to himself in a personal relationship. These concepts from birth through adolescence are represented in our levels of biblical learning document that shows the natural progression of learning provision for provision for children. significant adults in the congregation of the church provide the environment of unconditional love and confidence building for children begin their journey of faith. A well-planned scope and sequence provided the resources for children LifeWay (continued throughout the entire LifeSpan, with a basis for salvation for all age groups beyond infancy) helps teachers to guide along a balanced path of creating learning environments for children "listen, learn and do" the Word of God.) "

Note: Levels of Biblical Learning Vogel document referred to is quite impressive, and is a great visual representation of how LifeWay is about 10 basic biblical concepts of a vision of development.

Together, these documents illustrate our approach to "Faith Development." We have similar patterns that guide our approach to students (youth) and adults

How Sunday school is Christian-oriented? That is student and teacher?

Sunday school teachers should be Christians. Students are not to be. That includes adults. Promote Sunday school as "open groups practice open enrollment." I coined a five-word definition of an open group, "Wait new people every week. "An open group is a deliberate mix of believers and nonbelievers, Baptists and non-Baptists, the veteran and" newbie " go to church. In fact, anyone can register any Sunday school class at any time, without any obligation – to become a member church or even a follower of Christ. The way they say it is "The Sunday School enrollment does not make you a member of the church or forces him to become one." Also I have a five-word definition of the concept of "open enrollment" You can belong before they believe "Even if you never choose believe these principles are two of the hallmarks of the way Sunday school is done .. in many Southern Baptist churches.

What new directions are taken with students, after decades back? Please speak to experience new wave of cell groups.

Actually, "debate" Specialist in small groups of LifeWay, Rick Howerton, in a live format online recently on "Sunday School vs. Small Groups."
The number one challenge for the small group movement is the question, "What to do with children?" Or, more seriously, at least point of view of faith development: "What do significantly with the children?" LifeWay has a brand new resource, small group to life, which seeks to address this issue. Besides cheap Bible study guides for each participant, which are flexible enough to be used every week or every two weeks, free online help are available for activities focusing on the Bible with children – in writing so that a teenager can run plans – that connect conceptually with the material being studied by the parents. Do you have praise of God enters into the equation for Sunday school? What makes this component are in the formal curriculum?

The music has historically been an important element of Southern Baptist Sunday Schools. Back in the days of the pioneers of the Sunday school, when Sunday School met many places where there was no organized church or formal worship or experience in preaching, Sunday School held "meetings opening, "where participants met before going to their classes each age group. Singing was an important part of the" general assembly. "Increasingly churches fewer continue this practice today, but some do. As for the curriculum, all materials LifeWay Sunday School for preschoolers and students include music as an important element. preschool music is available as a separate action, a CD-ROM that includes additional teaching materials, and music. My wife and I teach pre-K children in our church. Yesterday, we started a unit in prayer. I put the CD into the player and put it on repeat a song about giving thanks to God. After hearing all morning, the children were ready to sing when we gather for "time of great group" hear the story of the Bible. In the LifeWay curriculum materials for primary school children, the music CD is included in the pack leader. The words of all songs from the CDs are printed on the back of the leader guides. LifeWay innovative curriculum for young people, acquaintances, including a playlist mp3:

Music, as well as serial dramas are a feature LifeWay curriculum DVD-driven youth, called fuel.

What is the main difference in approach between youth and children, and when it does break? Want to tell us something of care "and food of babies "in the Sunday school experience and approach? It seems strange that the children receive religious instruction.

LifeWay is one of the few – if not only – Editorial which produces a line of curriculum for Sunday school, especially for babies. We firmly believe that preschoolers are the most important in the spiritual and physical, emotional and intellectual development. If nothing else, babies can learn that the church is a safe place to go and people who care for me you love me and love Jesus. One of the levels of the biblical documents learning focuses on infants and what they think they can learn concepts about 8 basic biblical.

What music do you use?

I think you answered that above. We have been pleasantly surprised by the success of the new Baptist Hymnal (also published under the name of Worship Hymnal) published by LifeWay Worship last year as "hard goods" part of a generation of ambitious platform online next called The Cult of the project. This project promises to bring great musical accompaniment to the reach of even the smallest church.

Why do you think school practice Sunday is the Sunday school itself as an educational institution in the individual church is so high in the Southern Baptist Church? I note the Wall Street Journal said that Sunday schools are in decline:

"Why Sunday schools are closing," by Charlotte Hays said: "Fewer children have that experience, however. Like West Olive United Methodist, many churches have dramatically reduced or waived altogether in Sunday school for children. Two years ago, Bruce Morrison, a member of the Missouri Baptist Convention, wrote about attending a "conference ministry where they were represented several denominations. "During a break, he recalled," I heard a discussion between several of the attendees on the value of Sunday school in today's culture. The consequence was that the Sunday School ministry in the local church is obsolete. "

Two answers, not to: (1) I would recommend that a careful reader of cited article to read the comments posted in response to the online article. Some challenge the accuracy of the conclusions journalist. Enough said. (2) School Sunday – or more broadly, the study of the Bible in public / stage of living – is only important for Southern Baptists. Maybe it's a cultural issue. A historical thing. And normally throughout the year. No summer vacation. Not just for kids, while Mom and Dad will love. For the typical Baptist church South, the first two steps of disciple-making process are the cult and the assimilation / discipleship foundation / scholarships / ministry through small groups Bible study. As noted in the conclusion of an analysis conducted to follow up on the popular book Simple Church: "What could be simpler? Achieving the first two steps in the process of discipleship, with all members of the family, on a trip to church?!? "(Only Google "Sunday School at the Church of simple" if you want to see the full article.)

I was interested in listening than say the experience of worship is the number one in the Sunday school experience. Will you say more about that and some function of the sermon?

I think my point is the same as above: The worship service is the primary and first stage in the process of discipleship for most churches today. Sunday School used to be. In fact, Southern Baptist churches did not ask about church attendance until 1990, when annual average Sunday school attendance to 85% attendance informed worship. That proportion has fallen to 2 / 3, with a typical Sunday are 4 million people in Southern Baptist Sunday schools and 6 million people worship (including preschool children served during the worship, the worship of children, independent youth worship services, etc..) That is still strong in comparison the same proportion in other denominations. (Assemblies of God and Nazarene can give us a run for the money!)
