Dish (or TiVo) Receiver / DVR – Do you have to buy service too?

I want to quit cable TV (brighthouse) but keep the RoadRunner internet. I have an analog TV but do NOT have a DTV convertor box (coupon not available now).

I want the following:
1) DTV (so I know I need a convertor box)
2) DVR
3) I want to join Netflix and watch movies, TV from the internet on my TV (I am inclined to buy the ROKU digital video player)
4) I would prefer it if I could get all of the above in one piece of hardware BUT that is not essential

I do NOT want to have to sign-up for any other subscription other than Netflix. So I do not want to replace my cable Tv with satellite and I do not want a TiVo service. Nor do I want to buy a new DTV TV.

I have seen some Dish network (and Tivo) DTV/DVR boxes on ebay but I am not sure if you have to buy service also as they are mainly advertised as being for second rooms.

This answers at least some of your issues. No one device will do all that. Yes, you need to sign up for Dish service to get any use out of a Dish receiver. You say you don’t want to sign up for anything so that’s out. That leaves over-the-air as your only source of TV besides the Internet.or DVDs.

For over-the-air, you say you want DTV. But you have an analog TV with no converter. You are in the U.S. so you’re not going to get DTV on that set without a digital-to-analog converter. Yes, the coupon program has expired, but the converters are quite cheap. The first ref below is mine and I can highly recommend it.

You say you want a DVR (digital video recorder), but there’s no point in that without a digital TV. You’d do just as well inserting a VCR between the converter box and your analog TV.

Do you have an over-the-air antenna? In any case, getting the right antenna for DTV can be a long story. Put your local info in the 2nd ref below for a report on the channels you should be able to receive and what antenna is recommended.
