Why do some specific models of cars use rear turn lights in red?

Some models of makes like Nissan, Honda, BMW and others in the USA version (and I think, only in the USA) uses rear turn lights in red. Why? What is the reason for this brands to have one version for the USA market and other for the european and latinamerican market? And why red?

It’s just cosmetic in the United States – whatever the stylist thinks will look better. But some countries mandate that brake lights are red, and turn signals are amber. So if the companies want to sell their cars in that country, they have to install amber lenses for the turn signals.
