What are “Spee-dee ringer” pliers for?

A fellow mechanic has an old set of pliers that no one can figure out the use for. Stamped on the handle is “Spee-dee ringer PRS-7.” They work like external snap-ring pliers except that there are two small jaws that are pulled close by springs when pressure is applied to the outside tips of the pliers. Our best guess is its for old piston rings. Anyone know for sure?

Yes they piston ring plies i cant remember if they were for a specific type of ring or not but that is what they R i have a pair that my dad owned from way back
