Fix or replace front speaker pair from a 4+1 system?

The front pair of speaker from my system both are blown. (Infinity Minuette MPS). The receiver/amp has been replaced, and now I need new front speakers. Is it necessary to get a pair designed specifically to be part of such a surround sound system, or can I replace ‘em with any pair o’ speakers? (I’m no audiophile, fer sure.)

Speakers that operate in unison in a surround sound system should all match in timbre(the tonal characteristics). That is why it is ideal to have all identical speakers from the same manufacturer. The only exception is a subwoofer because it operates at low frequencies that are omnidirectional. In some rare occassions people have had success in mix matching speakers that match in timbre but the foolproof solution is to just use identical speakers. If you decide to use different speakers then they should match in impedance(ohms) as the original speakers. Good luck.
