Transmission issues Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited?

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2 liter AWD Quadra trac. The shifting is rough when driving slower in 1st and 2nd. but it shifts with no problem also when you are coming to a stop when it shifts into first it is a very abrupt shift not smooth. It seems like there is a space that has developed in between those gears if that makes sense?
