How do you determine which is the left side of a structural beam in the calculation of a UDL?

I understand that the basis of calculation or a UDL load point from the left side of the beam, but how to determine where the left side. If we assume that we are putting a steel beam on a wall outside a house, then is the left side and we are looking at the beam from outside the house, or watching from the inside? Thanks

From UDL means http://www.engpedia.com/engg/index.php/structural-engineering/1268-simply-supported-udl-beam-formulas uniformly distributed load is arbitrary which side is used, the comfort is that if you use the left side as you face it, then load vectors is lowered to the right and we are more accustomed to positive angles clockwise, or down to the right.
