using non-OEM supplies on Canon mf8170c?

I have a Canon MF8170c that needs a drum unit and the yellow cartridge. I’d like to go w/ non-OEM for the drum and remanufactured for the cartridge since it’s so much cheaper, and since it’s a laser printer, am thinking I could probably do this without much of a problem.

You take the EP-87s which are in the reman world pretty much interchangeable from what I use for my HP. (they are actually the same toner with a different chip).

I have been using refurbished toners and drums in my printer for 5 years without much incident.
However there are a few things you will want to know.

Buy from a reputable place. Make sure they have a great Guarantee and note that the drum does not ship well so you will want to stay local if possible.

Make sure they are a complete refurb. Some places just drill and fill and swap the chip. That doesn’t hack it on these bad boys. You need a fully refurbished cartridge.

If you have to pay a little more for a great guarantee, a reputable place and to obtain it locally – do it. You are still going to have HUGE savings and assurance that if there is a problem it can be addressed quickly.

I go through a full set of toners per month and a drum ever 4 (I print about 3-5K pages per month). In my 5 years I have had one bad drum and one cyan which spilled toner in my printer. They cyan I cheaped out and purchased from a company I didn’t know who was bringing them in from china. The drum had a small vertical band which would have gone unnoticed if I was not printing full pages of glossy brochures.

Overall, I am very happy with my non OEM toner. My printer has not been damaged. I have saved at this point well over 5K in printing costs and I have had no issues with quality.
