Guage Rat

What is the most humane way to get rid of rats?
I'm talking about big rats here! I live in a nice part of town with a large amount of vegetation that thrive in the area. Short of blowing away with a shotgun bore 12 (which I thought was human in the sense that they feel nothing, but local authorities told me not to do more) I'm looking for a way to deter them from eating my telephone wires, electrical cables, and my roses award. Because the way it is classified as vermin, is that you can only Wack with a shovel?
