Dart Fender

SOUND QUALITY ON Guitar?
I have a fender squier bullet guitar through a tascam guitar trainer for effects out a kustom dart 10 amp. I HAVE A LOT OF NOISE AND HUM!!! How can i get rid of this. Is it the guitar, amp,the effects, or maybe the cheap cables? If i choose to get a totally new setup wut guitar, amp, pedlas, and cables should i get? i play rock and blues if that helps. and i also am choosing between a multi effect board or a igtr from Waves for effects. Any oppinions help.
thanks,
aric
Well, start from the beginning – you’ve got a cheap guitar that probably isn’t shielded, may not be grounded properly, with lower quality components and pickups with a poor signal to noise ratio. So we have noise here.
If you have cheap cables, you could have an issue with poor soldering, poor shielding, high cable capacitance, or bad grounding. Any of these issues will degrade tone and add noise.
I don’t know what a tascam guitar trainer is. Hold on, let me google it. Alright, so it looks like the customer reviews say that its a cool unit, but the sound quality is merely decent for practice. That means it blows, but you can live with it if you aren’t trying to impress someone else. Lower quality sound FX and/or lower quality analog/digital converts = noise and lower quality tone.
The Kustom is probably the strongest part of your signal chain. =) That said, it’s a small amp – you won’t hear as strong a tone as you would with a bigger amp. Fewer watts means less tone. Better for playing in an apartment late at night, worse for getting killer tone during the day.
…
My suggestion is as follows – upgrade your guitar, then fx, then cables, then amp if you have that option. Normally I would say beef up your amp first, but the weakest link here is definitely your guitar. Get some better (higher output) pickups, and when either you or a tech is installing them, check any electrical connections for solid connections, proper grounding, and maybe see if your guitar can be shielded as well. Google it to see what I’m talking about – there’s an article called ‘taming the beast’ thats pretty good, if i remember correctly.
You should now have a better output, which means a better signal/noise ratio. This should solve the majority of your problems, but getting better cables and effects should get you the rest of the way. See what happens when you don’t use the trainer – if your tone improves, i’d start saving for some boss pedals or a multifx unit.
Don’t get Monsters. It’s not that they suck per se, it’s that when they die (and they do, trust me) you can’t repair them. I use Rapco, and I’ve never had one of their cables fail on me yet – I gig, and I don’t baby my equipment, and they still are good. Monsters died within a year, all of them I’ve had. Pffft. Anyways….
Good luck!
