bronco steering wheel problem?

Hi all, I'm looking for answer to this problem in my truck. I have a 90 8.5 4×4 bronco right. the problem is the steering wheel is a bit loose a little, but every time you move the wheel until the truck leaves, the mechanic told me that the problem is the need for the column being Instead, he said the reason is when I turn left or right or up and down the wheel is something to play the real engine of the column you think is right or I can do something else to see this problem because I'm not working right now and I have no money to buy a new column, plus the work of this kind. If you want another opinion you have to take it to another mechanic, but what he said sounds reasonable. Go to school, buy the tools and learn how to repair cars, if not to pay someone elses knowledge and investment.
