How do you remove a radio from ’02 WIndstar if U-shaped removal tools don’t work?

I inserted them as instructed, put slight pressure toward the outside and pulled but they just slide back out! I tried sliding them in and pulling straight out on the radio by sticking my fingers in the tape slot but I just ended up breaking a chunk of the face off. A friend’s kid “fed” the radio a handful of pennies and now it’s pretty much inoperative so I’m not too afraid of destroying it to get it out. I’ve tried removing the bezel but it seems to be held in place at the top by the radio! Any advice would be appreciated.

Just to clear this up, you want to put pressure out on the tool, creating a inward pressure on the inside. Basically, you want to pull the left tool toward the drivers door, and the right tool toward the passenger door. If this doen’t help, try only inserting the tool on one side at a time, get it loose, then try the other side while putting something behind the loose side to keep it from locking back in.
