2010 Hyundai Tucson Gl Review

Although I have been reviewing new cars and trucks for a couple of decades, I still think the manufacturers car in many ways closer to the remodeling of product lines to be fascinating. Cautious or bold, to placate the existing customer base or finding a new niche, the final decision can define the model – and sometimes the company.

Hyundai is definitely on a brave step, with successive iterations of the line to see improvements in appearance, powertrain management, and reliability. And their new second-generation sport-ute Tucson is just the latest example. While opened the original model in the compact SUV / crossover segment for the company – winner of the Automobile Journalists Association award for best new vehicle crossover in Canada for 2005 in the process – it was conventional style, designed to fit their skills, not stand out.

The same can not be said European-wrote his replacement. The 2010 Tucson loses his predecessor pug face and form of soap bars, earning sharp bends in sheet metal, the Hyundai family hexagonal front grille, lower air intake assertive, swept headlamps, tail lights and surround. Beyond the design aesthetic, it also gains a spacious and stylish cabin and cargo space.

By far the biggest change comes under the hood, the new Theta II Tucson winning 2.4-liter DOHC four-cylinder. From 176 horsepower and 168 lb.-ft. of torque, Hyundai says the Theta II provides approximately the same amount of power and acceleration as venerable V6 2.7L previous model, with fuel economy 20% better than the old package 2.0L four-cylinder engine.

In everyday operation, the new four-cylinder has more than enough to handle pushing 1529 pounds the AWD GL model curb weight. The engine is quiet and unobtrusive at a constant speed in response to stimulation of the accelerator pedal with a fast kick-down – the six-speed manumatic tester is light years improved over the old four-speed – and the acceleration necessary. It can be a little rough at high revs, but, again, high speed is rarely necessary. As for fuel economy, an average of 10.9 liters every 100 miles during the week, above combined rating of Transport Canada of 8.3 L/100 km, but most of what I have recorded most four-cylinder compact SUVs to the test in recent months.

For what it's worth, the Tucson comes with automatic transmission with an indicator Eco located between the speedometer and tachometer – the green LED lights according to fuel-efficient driving behavior. Hyundai claims fuel in the range from 15% to 17% are achievable.

However, in the front frugal fuel consumption, the tester came with silica Kumho tires low-rolling-resistance. Laudable, their stiff sidewalls exacerbate a suspension system and the company, contributing to a bumpy ride on rougher surfaces.

Speaking of suspensions, the Tucson has MacPherson struts up front, a multi-link rear, and larger stabilizer bars at both ends, with the four wheels controlled by coil springs and gas charged dampers. As a result, the SUV has a fairly flat attitude during cornering.

Hyundai has raised the standard security for the Tucson 2010, adding Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and Hillstart Assist Control (HAC) to a list that includes four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability control and traction control.

All wheel drive models now an advanced electronic system that automatically distributes power equally. In normal driving, power is delivered only to the front wheels, a driver-selectable AWD lock allows for a 50/50 torque split between front and rear wheels for off-road and very slippery conditions.

The electrical Tucson rack and pinion steering is firm at low speeds, unlike most similar systems, and lighting at high speeds, remaining heavy and a little dead in the center. I prefer this to an excess of momentum, the system insensitive, but not kill the Hyundai engineers to dial in a little more assistance for parking maneuvers.

Much like the exterior of the new Tucson makes its predecessor look, without grace, which is the high-tech interior design really surprised and impressed. Yes, there is still much hard plastic, but at least it's texture. In addition to the cabin two-tone colors and tasteful use of finishing satin (especially on the steering wheel, center console and fans) will go a long way in mitigating any baseness. And I love the cat-shaped tachometer and speedometer eye in the instrument panel lighting signature blue (very easy on the eyes) and the well-marked and properly located controls, buttons and controls. The fabric cover of the front seats offer adequate support for long trips and have carved high back for rear seat passengers to win a little more knee room. That said, despite the added wheelbase, which can be a little cramped, six-footers in the rear if the front seat occupants are of dimension similar. Disappointments? Only one, really. A $ 26,699 for the GL AWD, heated seats should be standard at this trim level.

The Tucson new open style gives visibility to stand out from the competition in a crowded segment is expected to increase at a rate above the industry average in general. And under that sheet metal is a crossover utility bold inherently decent and well designed it is ideal as a daily urban / suburban commuter.

Equipment Series: Air conditioning with cabin air filter, AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with auxiliary plug-in and six speakers, Bluetooth hands-free phone, power door locks, power windows with driver's side auto down, power heated outside mirrors, tilt steering, rear spoiler, cloth seats and interior trim, floor mats, map lights, rear window defroster, rear window washer / wipers, roof-mounted antenna, front bucket seats with adjustable headrests and lumbar support in a split folding rear seats with adjustable headrests, storage tray, three outlets 12 volts.
